HistoryRanelagh was built in 1875 for Joshua Gill who wished to accommodate his large family of 10 children. Ranelagh was built in a stately manner, which is unrivalled in Dubbo, even by today’s standards, to reflect Gill’s status as a prosperous local merchant. Gill owned the first general store in Dubbo, The Overland Store. Ranelagh is a single storey double brick home situated on an acreage opposite the Macquarie River. Although it retains most of its original features Ranelagh has been totally and sympathetically renovated over a period of 3 years in consultation with a heritage architect to ensure authenticity and comfortable 20th century living. The formal lounge features two black imported Italian marble fireplaces and original local red cedar bifold doors. The original ceilings which are all up to 12 feet high are still intact, some featuring tongue and groove cedar and others intricate plasterwork with antique light fittings. The high ceilings and tasteful décor add to the spacious and timeless ambience, so that Ranelagh is ideally suited for that special romantic weekend away. Until 2004 Ranelagh was used as a private home by owner and host Peter Arantz and is now open to discerning guests as luxurious 19th century style accommodation at an affordable price. |
